Our Approach to Impact

Beyond Bars measures impact not only by the number of participants reached, but by the changes that happen within them and around them. Our programmes aim to build confidence, strengthen practical skills, create livelihood pathways and mobilise a stronger support system around rehabilitation and reintegration.

We treat every participant with dignity and believe that real change happens when individuals are given the tools, guidance and opportunity to rebuild their lives. Through collaboration with prison authorities, government agencies, employers, funders, trainers and community partners, we work to create a more supportive ecosystem for second chances.

Theory of Change

If incarcerated individuals and marginalised communities are given practical training, life skills, mentoring, emotional support and access to livelihood pathways, then they are more likely to rebuild confidence, prepare for employment or enterprise, reintegrate with dignity and reduce the risk of reoffending.

  • Inputs: trainers, mentors, partners, funders, prison support, materials and programme management.
  • Activities: vocational training, life skills workshops, counselling, mentorship, job readiness and market access support.
  • Outputs: participants trained, sessions delivered, skills practised, products produced, proceeds generated and stakeholders mobilised.
  • Outcomes: improved confidence, stronger self-efficacy, enhanced livelihood readiness and better reintegration support.
  • Long-term impact: reduced risk of reoffending and a more inclusive society that supports second chances.
